Mr. Johnson retired in September 2004 as Chairman and CEO of GreenPoint Financial Corp. following the acquisition of GreenPoint by North Fork Bancorporation. Mr. Johnson had held the offices of Chairman and CEO since 1993.

Prior to joining GreenPoint, Mr. Johnson began his 20-year-long career with Chemical Bank, becoming President and Director in 1983. From 1989 to 1991 he was President and Director of Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co.

Mr. Johnson also is a director of Alleghany Corporation, R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company and The Phoenix Companies, Inc.
