Analyst Associate, Finance Division

Meaningful work.
There is a direct correlation between the work you do and the impact that it has on the company… you don't have to 'guess' whether your contribution is valuable because there are people who are looking for you work, waiting for your reports, and using your input to make very important decisions. That is definitely rewarding for me.

Support and encouragement.
My co-workers are open to answering my questions. They're always willing to stop and have a conversation with me… The people here really believe that it's a benefit for everyone to understand what's going on in the company. They're always willing to teach and train, let you shadow them and ask questions.

Career mobility.
A testament to Freddie Mac is the number of people who have been here more than 10 years. Many have had different roles… they've been encouraged to move around, explore new areas, learn different aspects of the business, and grow and mature as finance professionals… anyone in this position can go anywhere in the company.

Jump right in.
The internship program is definitely hands-on. You'll be expected to jump in and contribute. You'll also have the opportunity to learn, as you'll be in contact with a lot of smart people who've been here for a long time… As an intern, I was encouraged to learn and explore, meet new people, and ask questions.

Making an impact.
My boss takes me seriously and doesn't give me 'fluff' assignments. I'm actually involved in interesting projects that make a meaningful impact. I'm not 'pushing paper' here.

Mentoring in action.
I came back for three intern years under the same manager. He really helped me learn the ropes, the ins & outs of how to actually get things done at Freddie Mac, not just the 'official' requirements.

Ongoing opportunity.
With all the activity in the industry right now, new people coming in will be able to find their niche pretty quickly. For a lot of people, that's a determining factor in where they choose to work… There is room for advancement if you aggressively pursue it and align yourself with that goal.

Leading-edge technology.
Freddie Mac isn't by definition a 'technology' company, yet we have an infrastructure that rivals ISPs I've worked for. If you're in IT it's a really exciting place to work because you're going to get to see some cutting-edge concepts being implemented here.

What really matters.
Freddie Mac's mission isn't about making money; it's about helping people and placing them into homes. A home is one of the biggest purchases someone will ever make, and knowing I'm a part of helping someone achieve that goal is very rewarding.

Applying what you learn.
It's not very valuable to learn technologies if you can't apply it to your day-to-day job. The training program has a strong concentration in IT, the tools and technologies that Freddie Mac uses, and how it applies to our business.

The true meaning of “team.”
Even to this day, three years later, I continuously communicate with the people who were in my 8-week training program…they're in other areas of the company now, which is awesome actually, as it broadens your network and allows you to gain a different perspective of operations.

Career pathing.
What's great about Freddie Mac is that they're open to helping you find your niche and discover what you really want to do. I can strengthen my analysis skills, or pursue management… our vice president always stresses cross-training to learn about other areas, and to make sure our skills are kept up-to-date.

First impressions speak volumes.
When I interned, everyone was so nice, and very welcoming… People understand that when you're coming out of college it's a completely different world. You're still in a 'book' world. Freddie Mac took what I learned in school and showed me how to actually apply it.

Apply what you've learned.
I get to use my Finance degree in a trading floor environment. It's like working on Wall Street, yet I'm not subject to daily stress like traders in New York. I'm challenged by the many different opportunities to learn. Issues come up every day that we have to fix, and that makes me feel valuable. I definitely use my Finance major a lot.

The Analyst Associate program experience.
I'm in my first rotation, and I'm already on the trading floor. My group's job is to manage interest rate risk and compile reports for traders. It's an exciting time… I'm working with the market and it's changing so fast. It poses unique challenges, and provides the opportunity to learn something new every day.

There is no glass ceiling.
During my internship we had lots of sessions with management… I had lunch with the CFO… on a daily basis senior executives visited with us to explain what their department is about…it's a great way to understand how the company works and have direct access to senior executives at the same time. Most people don't get that opportunity.
